Frequently Asked Questions

At Paramount Merchant Navy Training Institute, we understand that aspiring seafarers often have questions before beginning their maritime journey. Here are some of the most common queries about our courses, eligibility, facilities, and placements.

For deck/engine officers, you need to pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) with minimum 60% aggregate. For ratings or general purpose positions, 10th pass is sufficient. Good eyesight and physical fitness are mandatory for all positions.

Most courses require candidates to be between 17-25 years at the time of admission. The exact age limit may vary slightly depending on the specific course and institution. Some post-sea courses may have different age criteria.

Yes, candidates must pass a medical fitness test as per Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules. You need normal color vision (no color blindness), good eyesight (correctable to 6/6), no major surgeries or chronic conditions, and overall good physical and mental health.

The main pre-sea courses include B.Sc. Nautical Science (for deck officers), B.E./B.Tech Marine Engineering (for engine officers), and DNS/GME (Diploma courses). You can also join through Indian Maritime University or private maritime institutes approved by DG Shipping.

Typically 3-4 years for degree courses including onboard training, or 1-1.5 years for diploma courses. After completing your pre-sea training, you'll sail as a trainee officer and work your way up through various certificates of competency (COC) over several years.

Starting salaries for trainee officers range from ₹30,000-60,000 per month and can increase to ₹8-15 lakhs per month for senior officers like Captain or Chief Engineer. Salaries are tax-free, and accommodation and food are provided onboard.

Typical contracts range from 4-6 months onboard, followed by 2-3 months of leave on shore. The work schedule is continuous while at sea with no weekends off, but the extended leave periods compensate for this.

Absolutely! The merchant navy is increasingly welcoming women officers. All courses and positions are open to women candidates who meet the eligibility criteria. Many shipping companies actively recruit women seafarers and provide equal opportunities.

The Indian Navy is the military naval force of India focused on defense operations, while the merchant navy is the commercial shipping industry that transports cargo and passengers. Merchant navy offers higher salaries and frequent shore leaves, while Indian Navy provides job security and pension benefits.

For Indian Maritime University (IMU), you need to clear IMU-CET (Common Entrance Test). Some state maritime academies conduct their own entrance exams. NEET scores are also accepted by some institutes. Additionally, you must pass the DG Shipping-approved medical examination.
